✅ Depuis 1965, les relations entre personnes du même sexe étaient passibles, au Botswana, de peines de prison pouvant aller jusqu’à 7 ans. La Haute Cour du pays a mis fin à cela le 11 Juin 2019. Une personne anonyme, dont on ne connaît que les initiales LM, était à l’origine de cette requête et a été vivement soutenue par les associations LGBT du pays.

✅ « Ce n’est pas seulement une victoire pour le Botswana, mais aussi une victoire pour toute l’Afrique », explique à France 24 Neela Ghoshal, chercheuse auprès de la divison LGBT de l’ONG Human Rights Watch. « Cette victoire change la donne, et apporte de l’espoir aux gens après les récentes déceptions ». En effet, la décision intervient quelques semaines après que le Kenya a refusé d’abroger les lois criminalisant l’homosexualité.
